This week on LONGPLAY we bring you a tribute to the blues…not as a style, but as a mirror.
These are songs born of real experience: of labor, migration, poverty, prison, heartbreak. But they’re also filled with humor, swagger, longing, lust. The blues is a language of survival, and repetition is part of the grammar: a way of telling the truth until it becomes bearable.
This isn’t a scholarly tour. No boxed set included. Just a collection of blues songs that I have listened to for years, from legends like B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf to the haunted murmurs and mountain trance of Dock Boggs.
You’ll hear a few strange turns, maybe even the voice of Steve from Blue’s Clues, trying to help us figure out what it all means.
And if you end up and sad and blue, it ain’t nobody’s fault but mine.
This is LONGPLAY.
Thanks for tuning in.
